  3. I don't know how much you know about Dr. Soroush and his work. The article he talks about in his recent letter named Azady Chon Ravesh (Freedom as a mean to an end) was published by him 12 years ago in Iran in a popular publication. He said the same things that he mentions in this letter 12 years ago when he lived in Iran. He even mentions the name of that old article in this letter. I’m interested to see what you were doing back then against the Islamic Republic :)

Another thing that shows you don’t know much about his involvement in the 1357 revolution was when you said that Dr. Soroush had a big roll in the revolution. I don’t agree with that. A lot of people thought Iran was going to change into a better society with lots of freedoms back then after Shah left. Let me give you an example, it seems like you care about Iran’s future. If things change and the Green Movement takes power in Iran (God willing) and Mousavi asks ‘you’ to run some organization, say in education or healthcare. Would you say no? You probably would say yes because you think you can help your country. Now if God forbid, Mousavi turns out to be another Khomeini. All you can do is to leave your position and start teaching others about the injustices. Does that mean you were guilty in that crime? Does that make you one of the founders of the Green Movement?

We need to be a bit careful about how we say things; especially if you try to bring down a giant like Soroush. Having some blog somewhere on the Internet doesn’t give us the right to call others rats, etc. Not sure if you know how popular Soroush is in Iran and in the university crowd. Kids pass his CD’s around like they contain forbidden music or something.

Hope I didn’t give you a headache. By the way, go to http://www.drsoroush.com/Lectures-Persian.htm and listen to his lectures. Read his work from 10 or 15 years ago and you’ll see how much the theoretical branch of the Green Movement is ahead.

My friend, Mehdi. Thanks for your comments, and apologies that I'm going to respond only selectively, given the number of points you have raised. So let's see.

No, I have not read much of Soroush lately, and I think (actually, I know) part of that is because I have a hard time with this man's character and attitude, which is definitely present in his writings -I find him a bit too full of himself, and I am allergic to that trait. His recent letter to Mahmoud Dolatabadi was a clear instance of an ugly ego. Frankly, I don't have much time for that. No matter how much he 'knows', when he does not have the right type of head on his shoulders, then he becomes a great chest of knowledge and not much more -to me.

You asked me what I was doing for Iran 12 years ago, and my answer is I was doing what I will be doing for the rest of my life, namely try to learn more while making myself a better person, in order to affect my world in better ways.

For you (or him, or anybody) to try to downplay the destructive role people like Soroush played in the early years of the revolution, and then to call for my understanding as a victim of his doings, based on the argument that he didn't know what he was doing, takes a lot of nerves, to say the least. He was not a child at that time. I was a mere adolescent at the time and it took me only a couple of short years to realize what kind of an ugly situation we were dealing with. How dare you say he didn't know what he was doing? And of course that is his own argument too, which only goes to further show the type of irresponsible character he has -more of what I said earlier. I can certainly forgive people for their errors of judgment and past stupidities, but I find it hard to feel forgiving for someone who refuses to take responsibility for what he has done, especially if what he has done amounts to doing and participating in the doing of such horrific acts. No my friend, don't ask me to forgive your Dr. Soroush for his ignorance at the time, that won't go far with me.

If I were to be asked today to go and take a role as important as he accepted to take at the time, trust me, it will not be an easy decision for me, and I will most definitely NOT accept such a role if it does not fit fully within my scope of what needs to be done and how. And then if I do go and if I do screw up, I will be ready to live with that, either to stick with it, or to be noble enough to turn around and say forgive me people, for I have harmed you.

As far as I know, this letter is the first place he has publicly apologized for his participation in the atrocities of Khomeini's days. And that's great of course, but for me that remains what it is: the first time he decides to do so is when he is certain the ship is finally sinking -and I did not say rat, by the way, you did.

About your suggestion that he is such a hot item among Iranian students these days, what really do you expect me to say or think of that? Do you really think that means what you are trying to say it means? I don't.

Thanks also for the link to his speeches collected on his website. What struck me, though, was that they don't include anything from the first ten or eleven years of the revolution. Sounds like an obvious omission to me, especially since those were the years that he was most active giving talks like a true revolutionary almost every day or two! Do you have any idea why there is nothing from all those years?

  7. Sadeq,

Again my friend, you need to read his work in past 20 year before you can say this with such certainty. Remember the example I gave you. The article discussed in his letter was written 12 years ago and not yesterday.

Regarding the rat thing, not sure if you know the ship example you used but we are both smart so let’s not fool ourselves.

I never tried to downplay his roll. I merely pointed out that he wasn’t one of the founders of the Islamic republic. If you say that he had a destructive roll back then, you need not to follow Mousavi, Karoubi, Khatami, Saneri, Montazari, etc, etc, etc and millions of people who really wanted change in 1357. Where things went from there is a different story but I can see how people felt back then because we are in the same situation now.

I still think we need to be a bit smarter in how we deal with people how we label people how are doing something positive these days. I’m just being realistic.

  9. One thing I see here is that we still haven't really learned to talk to each other

Once comes and calls Soroush a fossil, rat and some other names that I won't repeat here and he does that without knowing much about him.

Another comes and yells some other bad words about the first guys. Another guy joins and calls the first guy a fossil.

Jeeeez, when are we going to learn to have a decent discussion?

One thing no one cared here was the content of Soroush's letter which to me has been one of the best statements from both political and religious angle.

    God help us all.

  10. Sadeq,

I’m not sure if you live inside or outside of Iran, but from your posting earlier, I can say you read and write Farsi very well; so to answer your question on why there aren’t earlier works of Dr. Soroush, I must say again you jumped to conclusion so fast to satisfy your point of view that you missed his books and other publications section of his site. His papers go back to 1981 (year after the Revolution). If you read some of his works, you’ll see that by 1983 he had left the position in the government and had started analyzing and questioning the idea of a Supreme Leader in the government and the implications of that. In his famous letter back in late 90 to Khatami (when he was the president), he said exactly the same things he said in this recent letter. I must emphasize again that without knowing one’s work and having a preconceived idea that someone is ‘bad’ is how Khamenei looks at everyone in the world. Khamenei has made up his mind about almost everyone in Iran that he or she is ‘bad’ without really knowing what people’s problems are.

See, the point is that, I don’t personally don’t know Dr. Soroush because I’ve never met him and never talked to him. So the only thing I support here is his ideas (communicated through his books, speeches, CDs, etc.). There is a philosophy in his thoughts that can really help Iran to a very large degree. A way to bring modernity to our religion so the %20 ultra muslims in Iran can get along with the %80 liberal potion before one kills the other, figuratively of course although these days anything can happen. One thing I’ve learned from living in the west since I was a kid is that to agree and disagree on thoughts and ideas, and leave the messenger alone. Had we Iranians read Khomeini’s ideas and teachings before the revolution, I doubt that we would have followed him. Instead, we made it about him as the person. We saw him in the moon and we called him Imam and some other nonsense. No one care that he didn’t have a good plan for our country.

I just hope that this time we read and study and learn everything without some precondition or preconceived conclusions on who is bad and how is good. Who should apologize to whom and what not? All this to satisfy our own ego.

Just my two cents. Sorry to have given you a headache.

  11. My dear Anonymous friend,

Thank you for considering my Farsi reading and writing skills good, but I'm afraid your answer does not remove the question for me, of why there are no audio files of his speeches while he spoke abundantly during those ten eleven years. But then again, I don't think we need to feel responsible to answer every single rhetorical question either, so no problems there.

I don't think I called your venerable doctor anything like what you are accusing me of having said, namely 'bad'.

And concerning that letter to Khatami, which you claim he said the same things he has in this last letter, I'm afraid I have to disagree with that as well, he has never spoken to Khamenei's power in the terms he did in this last letter.

You say there is a philosophy in his thoughts that can really help Iran, well, that's great, I never said anything against that idea either. You say you have learned to separate the person from his ideas, well, I'm not sure I agree with you on that, but in either case I cannot be accused of having done that in what I wrote about Soroush either. I said that is a great letter, and I said it is significant, and I called it a historic letter, I literally did!

As for your ending point, that you hope people don't take the idea of apologies too seriously, I'm afraid I disagree with that as well. I think if someone has done some wrong, that person should not be trusted with any type of power until he apologizes and that apology is accepted. And believe me, Mr. Soroush has a lot to apologize about, and in this last letter he just started to do that -and even then, he apologized to 'God', instead of to the poor people who were victimized by his actions. That, my friend, is not the best kind of apology, as far as I am concerned.

But then again, if he's got some good ideas, that's great, and I'm all for using good ideas in good directions.

Can you once and for all explain what you men by this? And don’t speak in general. Please tell us what he’s done so we can all go after him and burn him on the stake.

The point is by attacking him personally without knowing much about him, you’ve turned the topic of your blog to a wrong direction. Instead of people discussing his ideas, people are calling each other names because you made it personal. Do you see why we are having this problem even in Iran
    ?

Btw, go read the letter he wrote to Khatami to see he talks about the same ideas. You keep thinking to be correct, one has to come and call Khamenie some name for his ideas to matter. That's what I'm trying to explain.
